It is hard to get back to work after a wonderful study trip to València and Madrid. Learning and meeting wonderful professionals, books, the exhibition of the Beato de Liébana, that I like so much, at the @Biblioteca National de España, a bit of wondering around those beautiful cities, and lots of new tools and materials to take back home. Perfect!

Codex Sassoon, is exhibited at the Museum of the J

Codex Sassoon, is exhibited at the Museum of the Jewish People for a week before going back to the US to be put on sale by Sotheby's in May.
The earliest most complete Hebrew Bible, circa 900 C.E. The codex was written in the land of Israel or Siria. It is an impressive codex with a fascinating history.

"Some years ago, four of five volumes of a manuscript Judeo-Arabic commentary on the Torah were offered for sale, comprising Bereshit to Bemidbar and written in hatzi kolmus script - a form of Hebrew cursive script, based on the Rashi alphabet. The title of the commentary, on the title page, is “Sefer Rabbeinu David”, however, the author’s name was not otherwise disclosed.
The colophon of each volume discloses that the manuscript was written / copied in Cairo, Egypt in 1869 by Shelomo Abigdor ben David Abigdor. In the absence of any other indicators as to the author’s name, the seller presumed that “Rabbeinu David”, mentioned in the title of the work, was David Abigdor, father of the scribe Shelomo Abigdor, and that the scribe had dutifully copied a commentary by his father. However, as a collector of Egyptian Judaica, who has long held an interest in all aspects of Egyptian Jewry, I believed (and it subsequently transpired to be the fact) that “Rabbeinu David” was none other than Rabbeinu David Hanaggid, grandson of the Rambam (Maimonides). Indeed, in 1901, a relative of mine in Cairo had published, at his own expense, a Judeo-Arabic commentary on Pirqei Avot by Rabbeinu David Hanaggid. It transpires that, a few decades later, Shelomo Abigdor again copied this same manuscript commentary on the Torah.
I was able to purchase the four volumes at a very reasonable - if not cheap - price, given that the seller had not correctly identified who Rabbeinu David was. It was a case of caveat venditor, rather than caveat emptor. Of the four volumes, two were in good to very good condition, whilst two were in very poor condition, having suffered from water damage. Thankfully, at the recommendation of the National Library of Israel, I contacted Timna Elper who did a magnificent job restoring especially the two damaged volumes, beyond anything I thought possible." יולי היא סטודנטית לעיצוב תע

יולי היא סטודנטית לעיצוב תעשייתי בבצלאל. היא בילתה איתי כמה ימים בסטודיו על מנת ללמוד את המקצוע ואת הצרכים המיוחדים של משמר ספרים. לאחר שיחות רבות וצפייה בתהליכי העבודה שלי, היא החליטה ליצור כלי שמשפר את היעילות ואת הנוחות בתיקוני נייר ויכול גם לשמש לבניית קופסאות שימור ועוד. שבוע שעבר הציגה יולי את הפרויקט בהצלחה רבה ולנו השאירה עיצוב מעניין וחדשני שבהחלט יעזור לנו בהמשך. היה כיף לקחת חלק!

Yuli is an industrial design student at the Bezalel Academy of Design. She spent a few days with me in the studio in order to learn the profession and the special needs of a book and paper conservator. After many conversations and watching my work process closely, she designed a tool that improves efficiency and convenience in paper repairs and can also be used to build preservation boxes and more. Last week, Yuli presented her project at the academy with great success and left us with an interesting and innovative design that will definitely help us in the future. It was fun to take part in her design process.

סידורי תפילה עם כריכות מפוארות מהמוזיאון היכל שלמה בירושלים. הסידורים האלה היו באופנה באירופה בסוף המאה ה-19 ובתחילת המאה ה-20.

הכריכות השונות עשויות שנהב או דמויי שנהב, משובצות בפסי מתכת מוזהבת, ומעוטרות בפרחים ובלוחות הברית. לרוב, יש להן אבזם מוזהב לסגירה.

בהמשך לבקשות שקבלתי, אני מציעה סדנת בנית קופסת שימור SOLANDER BOX. הסדנה היא מתאימה למוסדות תרבות, אספנים, אומנים ואנשים פרטיים המעוניינים ללמוד איך לבנות אותם הקופסאות בעצמם.

סוג זה של קופסה נוצרה לראשונה במוזיאון הבריטי לצורך קיטלוג אוצרות הטבע שלהם ולבסוף הפכה לנפוצה ביותר בעולם לשימור פריטים שונים ביניהם: שימור נייר, תצלומים וספרים. היא יכולה לשמש לאחסון ותצוגה של פריטים כאחד.

הקופסה מגינה על הפריט באופן פיזי וגם מגינה מפני חשיפה לאור, לאבק ושינויים חדים בטמפרטורה ולחות, דבר שמאריך את תקופת השימור של הפריט.

הקופסה תיוצר מקרטון, בד כריכה ונייר לפי הטעם של כל אחד ונדבר על הכלים הנדרשים לבנות את הקופסה הזו בספרייה, בארכיון או בבית שלכם.

לסדנא לא נדרש ניסיון קודם אלא רק ידיים טובות ורצון!

אתמול אירחתי את הסדנא לשימור הראשונה בסטודיו. הסדנא הייתה מורכבת מחלק תאורטי וחלק פרקטי.
זה היה תענוג בשבילי לארח קבוצה של משמרות וארכיוניות כל כך נחמדה ואני מחכה לסדנאות הבאות.
התוכנית תתחיל בפברואר ואני אפרסם את הפרטים בקרוב. מחכה לזה...📚

Yesterday we had the first preservation workshop at the studio with both theoretical and practical parts.
It was a pleasure for me to host such a nice group of conservators and archivists, and I am looking forward to the coming year's workshops. The program will start in February and will be anounced shortly. Looking forward to it!📚

היה לי את הכבוד והעונג לשקם את המהדורה הראשונה של הספר "מדינת היהודים" מאת תיאודור הרצל, שהופיע ב-14 בפברואר 1896 בהוצאת הספרים מ. בריינטנשטיין, בווינה. הספר שייך לבית הנשיא. בדף השער, מעט דהויה, הקדשה לד"ר ווילהלם גולדבאום, בכתב ידו של הרצל.
ספר זה חולל מהפכה בעולם!🇮🇱

I had the honor and the pleasure of restoring the first edition of the book "Judenstaat" by Theodor Herzl, published on February 14, 1896 by the M. Breitenstein publishing house in Vienna. The book belongs to the President's House. On the title page, slightly faded, a dedication to Dr. Wilhelm Goldbaum, in Herzl's handwriting.
This book caused a revolution in the world!🇮🇱
